Trail guide
K1 is Plitvice’s long lake-zone circuit: a 16.5 km loop from Entrance 1, through the Lower Lakes and around Kozjak into the Upper Lakes, then back to the same north entrance. The park allows 6–8 hours; plan on about seven, with time to stop at falls and viewpoints. This is the route for a full day among the park’s connected lakes, not a quick waterfall visit. The published figure is for the complete K1 program; it doesn’t separate walking distance from the short electric-boat crossing. It’s the choice if you want both lake zones in one outing and have the time and stamina to keep moving all day.
From the north entrance, K1 visits the Big Waterfall and follows the Lower Lakes canyon before continuing along Kozjak’s west shore. The limestone walls and turquoise pools are the dramatic opening; after that, the lakeside path carries you into the wider lake system. The walking surface changes between compacted paths, wooden boardwalks and stairs. One lower section includes a mapped 54-step wooden descent, so this isn’t a smooth, flat promenade even though much of the route is purpose-built for park visitors.
From Kozjak’s west side, the route continues past the Prštavci waterfalls and Tomićevo Pogledalo, then through the Upper Lakes. The Upper Lakes lie in a dolomite valley with gentler relief and dense forest; the Lower Lakes are smaller and shallower in a more sharply cut limestone canyon. That change in landscape is part of the payoff. The park identifies the Prštavci as its biggest Upper Lakes falls, so leave time there and at the named viewpoint rather than treating the long middle section as transit.
The return uses a short electric-boat ride to reach Kozjak’s east shore, then follows the path above the eastern side of the Lower Lakes canyon back to Entrance 1. The crossing is part of the K1 itinerary, not an optional shortcut, and the park says boat rides are included with a valid entrance ticket. The official K1 description lists walking and this boat crossing, not a panoramic-vehicle ride. Don’t try to squeeze the circuit into a half-day.
The color comes with a geology story. Water flowing over limestone and chalk deposits calcium carbonate that forms travertine barriers; over thousands of years, those barriers built the lake basins and waterfalls. Mosses, algae and aquatic bacteria help the tufa form, and the process continues today. The cascades aren’t one single waterfall system: water keeps building small natural dams and spilling over them, linking the route’s lakes and falls.
This is a long day on developed paths, but the boardwalks and stairs make for varied footing. The full loop has no verified accessibility audit; mapped stretches include wooden steps and boardwalk sections that may not suit wheelchairs, so confirm access needs with the park before setting out. Crowds at shared boardwalks and transport areas can slow the popular sections. One K1 outing that began at opening found most of the long route quiet apart from those shared bottlenecks, so an early start is a good bet if fewer pauses matter. Dogs are allowed on leash.
The park map marks toilets, eateries, parking, information points and boat terminals around the lake zone, though it doesn’t confirm which are reliable mid-route services. Check before counting on a meal stop. Tomićevo Pogledalo is the route’s named lookout; leave time to take in the Upper Lakes from there instead of treating it as another pass-through point. The Big Waterfall and Prštavci are the main photo pauses. At the Lower Lakes, include part of the cliff or boardwalk with the falls so the picture carries both the water and the scale of the canyon.
