Program A is a 3.5-km (2.2-mile) loop from Entrance 1, usually 2–3 hours with time to look around. It visits Veliki Slap, follows the Lower Lakes canyon upstream past four named lakes, then climbs the east side of the canyon to return to the north entrance. Choose it if you want Plitvice’s waterfall and boardwalk experience in a shorter walk. This is the park’s walking circuit; Program B is a separate itinerary that adds the electric boat and panoramic vehicle.
Start at Entrance 1 in Rastovača and follow the marked route toward Veliki Slap. The first part drops from the entrance area into the limestone gorge. Wooden boardwalks and short stairways keep the route close to the pools and cascades, with sections of paved or compacted path between them. The narrow boards, steps and changing surfaces call for steady footing, especially near the waterfall.
After Veliki Slap, continue upstream along Novakovića brod, Kaluđerovac, Gavanovac and Milanovac, in that order. The route stays in the canyon beside clear, blue-green water, with small drops linking the lakes. The narrow plank walkway near the waterfall can bottleneck when people stop for photos. Keep moving where people need to pass and take in the water as you go.
At Kozjak Bridge, Program A turns uphill toward the east side of the canyon and returns to Entrance 1. After the waterside walk, this is the main change in effort: expect a climb and wooden steps before the route reaches the higher return path. Allow the full two to three hours; the waterfall, stairways and views make this a stop-and-look walk.
Veliki Slap is the largest waterfall in the Plitvice Lakes and in Croatia. Water pours over a high limestone face into a pool at the canyon’s lower end. Step back far enough to include the rock wall and the water below; that gives the drop a sense of scale. The nearby walkway is narrow, so make the photo stop short when others are waiting to pass.
The pale dams between the lakes are tufa, porous limestone formed as calcium carbonate leaves the water and accumulates on algae, bacteria and moss. Palustriella commutata is one moss involved in building these barriers. They are still growing and changing the lake edges and waterfalls. Stay on marked walkways and do not damage the rock; the route lets you see the formations without stepping onto them.
Kozjak Bridge takes its name from the lake beyond the Lower Lakes. About 400 years ago Kozjak was two lakes divided by a roughly 40-meter waterfall. Growth of a lower tufa barrier raised the water until the separating wall disappeared beneath the lake. It is a useful reminder that the chain of pools and falls is still changing.
Entrance 1 is the signed start, with paid visitor parking beside the north entrance. The park remains open year-round, while public hours change by season; check the current opening window before setting out. A park entry ticket is required, and dogs are allowed on leash. Keep to marked paths, especially on boardwalks over water and along the tufa barriers.
