Guide
Entrance 1 is Plitvice Lakes’ northern gate and the main starting point for the Lower Lakes. Just beyond the ticket area, the rim opens across a limestone canyon to Veliki Slap, with the Sastavci cascades below. If you want the famous panorama without first committing to a long walk, this is the place to begin.
Four green-marked tour programs start here, with different lengths. The options range from a few hours to a full day; longer circuits can add an electric boat and the panoramic train. Marked paths and wooden walkways lead from the overlook down among the pools and waterfalls, so treat the gate as the start of a real outing, not a roadside photo stop. Check the route map before heading down and choose the circuit that fits your day.
Veliki Slap is 78 m high, Croatia’s tallest waterfall. From the eastern rim, Sastavci can look like another tier of the same cascade, but it is a separate group of falls; the Korana River begins below. The classic composition takes in both the high drop and the lower falls. You can get it almost immediately from the gate; closer boardwalk and pool views mean taking a marked Lower Lakes route.
Plitvice is a living karst landscape. Calcium carbonate settling from the water builds tufa barriers that dam streams into lakes; aquatic mosses, algae and bacteria help the mineral build-up along. Those barriers keep growing and eroding, which is why the falls and lake edges are always changing.
Researchers were measuring Plitvice’s lakes by 1850. The later work of Ivo Pevalek showed how aquatic mosses and algae help form tufa and helped support protection of the area. Plitvice became Croatia’s first national park in 1949 and joined UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1979.
Ticketing, route information and restrooms are at the entrance; paid surface parking is just north of the gate. For food, Buffet Slap is a nearby quick-service stop, while Lička kuća serves Lika regional cooking. The wider park can get crowded, with waits at boat docks and return transport on some circuits. Start early if you can, and leave room in your plan for the walk itself.
