Point Reyes Lighthouse Headlands

Overview

About Point Reyes Lighthouse Visitor Center

Why stop

  • Oceanfront lighthouse and marine-life exhibits
  • Historic maritime setting at the end of the headlands

Heads up

  • Long uphill walk from parking
  • Strenuous 300-plus stair climb to the lighthouse
This is the small building near the far western tip of the headlands, and it is the anchor point for a visit to the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse. The light was built in 1870 to warn mariners around these headlands and served for 105 years before retiring in 1975, and the exhibits inside explain what that work involved. A small bookstore covers the local coast and its history.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Posted hours commonly run 10 am to 4 pm, with a later noon opening on one weekday, and the stairs keep to the same window. Those hours are short and the drive is long, so check hours before you commit to the trip. Late arrivals regularly find the center and the stairs already shut for the day.

Visitors report that weekends bring more people and limited parking, while weekdays feel quieter. There is also repeated praise for the views and occasional wildlife sightings. Conditions vary by day, so come for the exhibits and the history and treat the rest as a bonus.

Getting there

  • Address is 27000 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Inverness, and the center sits at the very end of that road.
  • Plan roughly 45 minutes of driving from the Bear Valley Visitor Center.
  • From the lighthouse visitor parking lot, walk past the gate and continue west about 0.4 miles (0.6 km) to reach the lighthouse and visitor center.

What you will see insideExhibits on the historic lighthouse, marine life, and maritime history
  • Exhibits on the historic lighthouse, marine life, and maritime history
  • Displays on whales, seals and sea lions, birds, and wildflowers of the headlands
  • The attached Ocean Exploration Center, focused on the north-central California ocean environment
  • A touch table with baleen and marine-mammal skulls

  • The approach from the parking lot or shuttle stop runs about 650 to 700 meters (0.4 to 0.45 mile) and is mostly uphill on the way out to the center, so budget time and energy for that leg.
  • Below the center, a stairway of 300-plus stairs drops to the lighthouse itself, and visitors consistently describe the climb back up as strenuous. Treat it as a real workout, not a stroll.
  • The stairs open only when the visitor center is open and wind stays below 40 mph (64 km/h), and they close when winds exceed that limit.
  • The Observation Deck at the top of the stairs is open daily from 6 am to about 11:45 pm and gives a view down toward the light even when the stairs below are closed.
  • Plan around the two physical constraints here: the long uphill walk from parking and the 300-plus stair descent and climb. Confirm current access details in advance if wheels, mobility limits, or small children are part of your group.

  • A refillable water bottle. A filling station sits near the east end of the green garages, about 100 yards before the visitor center. Bottled water is not sold at park visitor centers or bookstores.
  • Wind and weather layers. This is an exposed headland, and the wind limit on the stairs exists for a reason.
  • Downloaded maps and directions. Cell service in the lighthouse area is minimal to nonexistent.

  • Pets are allowed in the parking lot and along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard east of the lot, and are not allowed beyond that.
