Overview

About Peter Behr Overlook

Why stop

  • Wide bluff-top view over Drakes Beach and the bay

Heads up

  • Exposed to wind and coastal fog
Most visitors park at Drakes Beach and walk straight to the sand. A short detour up to this named bluff-top viewpoint changes the scale of the place, trading the beach-level view for a high, open perspective down the full curve of Drakes Beach, its pale cliffs, and the water beyond.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to visit

  • Winter and spring are the strongest window for wildlife interest. Northern elephant seals haul out around the Point Reyes headlands in greatest numbers from December through March for birthing and mating, with spring molting haul-outs, and Drakes Beach has hosted a colony since 2019. Sightings from above are a seasonal possibility, not a guarantee, and late summer usually has very few animals.
  • Clear weather matters more than the hour. Fog can erase the far headland entirely, so a bright day after the marine layer lifts gives the best bay and cliff view.
  • Early morning or late afternoon softens the light on the cliff striations and puts fewer people between you and the edge. Midday sun flattens the banding.
  • Bring binoculars if you are curious about seals or activity far down the beach. They are a sensible aid here, not a requirement.

How the access works

  • The path leaves from the western edge of the Drakes Beach parking area and climbs to the viewpoint.
  • It is a short uphill walk on a narrow footpath, roughly a person and a half wide, generally in good condition.
  • Pets are not allowed on the path or at Drakes Beach.
  • Accessibility of the path itself is not confirmed, and the grade is uphill, so plan accordingly.

“You're nearing Drakes Beach, where pale, banded sandstone cliffs curve around the bay. The layers began as sand in a shallow sea roughly ten to thirteen million years ago.”

More about Peter Behr Overlook

What you seeFrom the bluff edge the beach reads as one long sandy arc backed by light sandstone cliffs…

From the bluff edge the beach reads as one long sandy arc backed by light sandstone cliffs banded with horizontal striations. Those layers began as sand laid down in a shallow sea roughly 10 to 13 million years ago, later compacted and uplifted, with erosion exposing the lines you can trace along the cliff face. On clear days the view carries out across the bay water to a distant headland, which is what makes this spot worth the climb rather than just a photo from the parking lot.

Practical orientationThe facilities are down at the beach complex, not at the bluff edge.

The facilities are down at the beach complex, not at the bluff edge. Near the parking lot you will find auto and bus or RV parking, accessible flush restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables, exhibits, and a visitor center with a bookstore and food and drink. Sort out restrooms and water before you head up, since there is nothing at the overlook but the view.

Honest drawbacksThis is a viewpoint and nothing more, so it suits a 15 to 30 minute stop rather than an outing…

This is a viewpoint and nothing more, so it suits a 15 to 30 minute stop rather than an outing on its own. The bluff is exposed to wind and coastal fog, which can be cold even on a pleasant inland day. If you continue down to the sand afterward, treat the water with respect: the ocean here runs near 50°F, and sneaker waves, rip currents, and hypothermia are real hazards, so stay well back from the surf line and keep an eye on children.
