Frankton Beach sits on the Frankton Arm of Lake Wakatipu, about a quick hop from central Queenstown. It’s the quieter, more local-feeling alternative to Queenstown Bay, with big views across the water to The Remarkables and plenty of space to spread out.

Why it’s worth a stop

Come for the panorama and stay for the easy lake access. It’s a relaxed place to swim, paddleboard, or simply park up on the pebbles and watch the light move over the mountains. Plane‑spotters get a bonus: you can see jets arrive and depart across the arm.

• Swim or SUP from the gentle, shallow edge.
• Unwind with a picnic—the setting does the heavy lifting.
• Stroll or cycle the lakeside paths: start here on the Frankton Arm Walkway toward Queenstown Gardens, or head for the Kelvin Peninsula Walkway across Kawarau Falls Bridge.

Aircraft noise comes and goes with flight movements; if you’re sensitive, wander a bit along the shoreline to find quieter pockets. Water clarity can look brownish in patches near shore at times—many visitors still swim.

Sunrise paints the lake calm and pastel; sunset brings warm glow on the peaks. Weekdays and early mornings are the most peaceful, while afternoons tend to be busier in good weather. Most people spend 20 minutes to 1.5 hours here.

A bit of backdrop

Lake Wakatipu is glacier‑carved and steeped in legend—local Māori tell of the giant Matau, whose burning body formed the lake’s S‑shape and whose "heartbeat" explains the subtle rise and fall of the water. It’s a scenic setting with a story to match.

Keep an eye out for friendly ducks along the shoreline, especially near the quieter coves.
