Queenstown Gardens

A protective ring of mature Douglas fir frames the gardens, while feature trees like monkey puzzle, giant sequoia, oaks, and firs add character. The formal Rose Garden (established in the 1960s and stocked with hundreds of bushes) peaks in summer. Memorials include tributes to Robert Falcon Scott (1913) and early settler William Gilbert Rees (1978), and there are scattered artworks and a historic band rotunda (rebuilt in 1999).

It’s not just a pretty stroll. Play the free, permanently marked 18‑hole disc golf course, or opt for tennis, lawn bowls, skate/BMX, and ice skating next to the Park Street entrance. Families gravitate to the playground; picnickers spread out on the lawns with lake breezes for company.

Expect regular birdsong and waterbirds along the shore and pond—bellbirds, tūī, fantails, scaup, paradise shelduck, crested grebe, and more mingle with common introduced species. On calm days the lake is a mirror; on breezy ones the firs whisper and the paths feel lively.

From early resident plantings to a rose garden added in the 1960s, the place evolved into a showcase of both exotic and native species. The rotunda near Park Street first went up in 1891 and was carefully rebuilt in 1999, and the Scott and Rees memorials anchor key corners of the grounds.

• Do a full lakeside loop, then detour into the Rose Garden for color and fragrance.
• If disc golf tempts you, bring or borrow a disc in town and watch for fairways crossing shared paths.
• To extend your stroll, continue along the waterfront track toward Kelvin Heights for bigger views.
