Overview

St Omer Park is Queenstown’s quiet, lake‑edge green space: open lawns, established trees, and uninterrupted views across Lake Wakatipu to the Remarkables. It’s not a headline attraction, more a blissfully easy place to exhale, stroll, and soak up the scenery only a few minutes’ walk from the waterfront hub.

What You’ll See

Expect classic Queenstown vistas: snow‑dusted peaks in cooler months, shimmering lake blues in summer, and photogenic overhanging trees where branches dip toward the water. On a lucky pass the historic steamship chugs across your frame. Keep an eye out for ducks and common lake birds patrolling the shallows—great for families and casual photographers.

Facilities & Layout

The park strings along Lake Esplanade with flat, paved paths ideal for prams and low‑key cycling. You’ll find open lawns, benches, a small playground, and free public BBQs (two units along the frontage). Toilets are close by—one block was added along Marine Parade, and there’s another by the west end near One Mile car park—so you’re covered even if you don’t duck back into town.

Best Time to Visit

Go early morning for calm water, soft light, and fewer people. Late afternoon into golden hour is gorgeous for photos and picnics, though it’s busier in summer and holiday periods. The park is open 24 hours, and an evening wander can be lovely when the lake is quiet.

Getting There & Parking

It’s an easy 10–15‑minute walk from the town center along the waterfront. Street parking runs beside Lake Esplanade, but it can fill quickly in peak season—arrive early. Note that in 2025 overnight parking was banned from 10pm–6am along parts of Lake Esplanade and Park Street; always check the signs before you leave the car.

History

Named for early settler (and mayor) François St Omer, the park owes much of its character to the tree‑planting he kicked off with his son and a local chemist—think graceful willows and a greener lakefront than the barren shore that once sat here. Frank St Omer later bequeathed the reserve to the council, cementing it as public space.
