Getting there

From Highway 101, take the Klamath Beach Road exit just south of the Klamath River, then follow Coastal Drive to the paved spur on its west side. Most vehicle sizes can reach the lot with care, but RVs and vehicles towing trailers cannot complete the full loop; High Bluff is their turnaround point.

More about High Bluff Overlook

A quick coastal stopHigh Bluff Overlook is a picnic area and viewpoint above the Pacific on the Coastal Drive west…

High Bluff Overlook is a picnic area and viewpoint above the Pacific on the Coastal Drive west of Klamath. From the parking area, a short paved path of about 100 yards leads to the southern view of Split Rock and the rocky coast. It is an easy way to trade another redwood grove for sea stacks, surf and open ocean; the site is listed as wheelchair accessible.

Two views from the lotThe paved path heads south to the main overlook.

The paved path heads south to the main overlook. A separate, rougher path goes north for about 300 yards, descending to a lower view of the rocky cliffs and a flat clearing on an old quarry site. That path does not reach the shore, so save it for a look from above rather than a beach walk.

Watch the bluffEagles and peregrine falcons often ride the air currents along the cliffs.

Eagles and peregrine falcons often ride the air currents along the cliffs. Gray whales pass offshore in spring and autumn; bring binoculars if you want to scan the water. An interpretive exhibit at the overlook covers coastal geology, adding a little context to the broken shoreline below.

Picnic above the surfThe site has picnic tables, grills and a vault or composting toilet.

The site has picnic tables, grills and a vault or composting toilet. Bring your own picnic; the tables and grills make this an easy lunch stop. For a photo, frame a nearshore rock or the bluff edge in the foreground and let the coast run south toward Split Rock.
