“You're approaching Longs Peak Trailhead, the start of some serious mountain outings. Chasm Lake is my pick if you want the view straight up Longs Peak's sheer east face, the Diamond, without attempting the summit.”

More about Eugenia Mine

What you'll findEugenia Mine is a historic mine site on Battle Mountain's eastern slopes, reached by a 1.

Eugenia Mine is a historic mine site on Battle Mountain's eastern slopes, reached by a 1.4-mile spur from Longs Peak Ranger Station. It's a niche backcountry stop for mining history: a ten-foot steam boiler stands beside Inn Brook, with old homestead remains and mine tailings nearby. Go for that unusual industrial history, not a dramatic viewpoint or an intact mine. The route is about 2.8 miles round trip.

A mine and a homesteadThe site preserves a small human story alongside the machinery.

The site preserves a small human story alongside the machinery. Carl Norwell's family lived here, and a piano was hauled to their homestead by freight wagon and horses. Mining here was unsuccessful; the shaft has been sealed since the 1960s. The tailings remain because disturbing them could send more soil and sediment into streams.

From Longs Peak Ranger Station, the trail climbs steeply through forest for about half a mile before the right-hand mine spur eases toward the site. The one-way approach gains about 508 feet. Trailhead parking is limited and can fill early on summer weekends; leave room for afternoon thunderstorms, too. This is a surface visit to the remains.
