Trail guide
Coyote Valley Nature Trail is a 1-mile round trip, mostly level out-and-back with a short loop at the far end. It follows the Colorado River through a broad meadow, with the Never Summer Mountains in view. Allow 45 minutes to an hour; this is a leg-stretcher and wildlife watch, not a strenuous hike. Start at Coyote Valley Trailhead and include the return; the northbound continuation to another parking area is a different, longer outing.
Within the first tenth of a mile, a footbridge takes you over the Colorado River. The picnic area is to the left after the bridge; turn right at the junction to continue alongside the river. Benches give you places to pause. After a little over 0.4 mile, take the short loop at the far end, then retrace the riverside path to the trailhead. The first 0.1 mile is the roughest, steepest stretch; beyond the bridge, the longer riverside section is mostly paved and level.
The route opens into Kawuneeche Valley, where the Never Summer Mountains fill the view. Elk often graze on the meadow's sedges and grasses; bring binoculars if you want to watch from a distance. In spring, the meadows can have wildflowers. At the footbridge, put the river in the foreground with the open valley beyond for a sense of place.
Park at Coyote Valley Trailhead off US 34 in the Kawuneeche Valley. Restrooms are at the trailhead, and picnic tables sit just beyond the river crossing. The park describes the trail as level and wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, though the first approach is unpaved and the short initial grade is the main accessibility caveat. Check current details if a consistently firm, level surface is essential. Pets are prohibited on park trails; trained service animals are allowed.
