Harbison Meadows Picnic Area is a roadside picnic area on the edge of a broad meadow on the park's west side. It sits about 0.7 miles from the Grand Lake entrance along Trail Ridge Road, among the first stops after you enter from the west. Covered and uncovered picnic tables look across the lower Kawuneeche Valley toward the distant Gore Range. This is a good place to pause for lunch or a breather, not a stop that needs a long visit.

There are tables under a pavilion and out in the open, along with fire grates; portable grills are allowed. Park picnic areas are first-come, first-served, so bring your own meal and keep the plan flexible. The park lists accessible parking and a sloped packed-gravel path to the tables, a detail to factor in if someone in your group needs a level approach.

The meadow and its wildlifeThe open meadow is habitat for elk, mule deer, coyotes and migratory birds.

The open meadow is habitat for elk, mule deer, coyotes and migratory birds. You may spot wildlife, but there's no guarantee; the wide valley view is the reliable part of the stop. The trees beyond the meadow still show the effects of the 2020 East Troublesome Fire. Keep wildlife wild: watch from the picnic area and don't approach or feed animals.

Who the meadow is named forKitty and Annie Harbison began homesteading adjoining plots here in 1896.

Kitty and Annie Harbison began homesteading adjoining plots here in 1896. They ran a dairy ranch, built cabins and cared for their parents. The park acquired the land from Mame, their foster daughter and heir, in the late 1930s. That history gives an ordinary lunch stop a real connection to the people who lived in this valley before the park.
