This roadside overlook on Cactus Forest Loop Drive in Saguaro East opens across a Sonoran Desert slope toward the Rincon foothills. Interpretive panels introduce dozens of regional cactus species, including giant saguaro, prickly pear and teddy bear cholla. Treat it as a quick plant primer and open view; a denser cactus-forest feel comes later along the loop.

The eight-mile Cactus Forest Loop is paved and one-way from Rincon Mountain Visitor Center; this is the next overlook after Future Generations Overlook. A small pullout has about five spaces, including accessible parking, and a short paved sidewalk leads to the viewpoint. Use the visitor center for restrooms and water before the drive; none are identified at this pullout. For a more comfortable visit, aim for the cooler morning. The loop restricts vehicles wider than 8.5 feet and vehicle-trailer combinations 40 feet or longer, and RV parking is limited.

The road was built for slow lookingThe loop began as Skyline Loop Road.

The loop began as Skyline Loop Road. Civilian Conservation Corps crews at Camp Tanque Verde started it in 1936, and crews based near Randolph Park completed the route in 1939 after the first camp closed. The road was paved in 1951 and rehabilitated in 2006; its overlooks and turnouts frame views across the desert.

From the sidewalk, include foreground cacti and low shrubs beneath the ridge so the picture shows the desert floor as well as the mountains. Early or late light can bring warmer color and longer shadows.
