Cactus Forest Trail

Cactus Forest Trail is a shared desert path between Cactus Forest North and South Trailheads in Saguaro’s Rincon Mountain District. The through-section is 2.5 miles one way; from North, hike to South and retrace the route for a 5-mile out-and-back. Allow about three hours with a stop at the kilns. This is a long cactus-forest walk rather than a summit hike, with a relatively mild northern end and rougher tread farther south.

Expect hard-packed soil through mature saguaros, palo verde and low desert shrubs. The trail stays broad and mostly flat for roughly the first half mile, then a short signed spur leads past old kilns. A roughly 35-foot rut about a foot deep lies close to North Trailhead, so that flat opening is not uniformly smooth. Kiln distances differ between published maps: the current route description puts them half a mile south of North Trailhead, while an older map calls the north-side kiln outing two miles round trip. Check the signed map if the kilns are your turn-around.

Beyond the kilns, the trail rises and drops by up to about 150 feet through Javelina Wash; the tread narrows, turns rocky and uneven, and crosses three washes with soft sand. The last stretch to South Trailhead is wider but still rocky. A wash branch heads toward Lime Falls, a separate side trip rather than the endpoint of this North-to-South route.

The masonry remains are from large lime kilns used by early residents to turn local Horquilla Limestone into lime for mortar. That limestone is more than 300 million years old, giving this walk a specific piece of the district’s human history. A short signed spur reaches the ruins.

Mountain bikers and horses use this multi-use route, so expect other traffic on the same narrow tread. Dogs are not allowed on park trails. Bring plenty of water for the full return; no on-trail water source is described. Park admission is required. No whole-route elevation-gain figure is published, but the route has modest ups and downs rather than a sustained climb.
