Desert Ecology Trail

Desert Ecology Trail is a 0.25-mile paved loop beside Javelina Wash in Saguaro's Rincon Mountain District. It gives you a brief, close look at common Sonoran Desert plants, with signs explaining the ecology of the surrounding cactus garden. Choose it for an easy interpretive walk, not for distance or a climb; allow about 10 to 15 minutes if you stop to read.

Start at the pullout on Cactus Forest Loop Drive and follow the marked crossings to the paved path. The path circles among desert scrub and cacti, with benches spaced along it, and returns to the pullout. The Park Service lists the loop at a quarter mile; some route listings round it to 0.3 mile. The pavement is about 60 inches wide, with a 1.8% typical grade and a 4.4% maximum. The park describes it as built to ADA standards, though those measurements cannot guarantee that every visitor's mobility needs will be met.

The signs give context for the plants around you and the role water plays in the Sonoran Desert. That makes the loop a useful introduction before a longer hike, or a worthwhile short walk on its own. It is not a viewpoint or a route to a separate destination; the plants and interpretation are the point. Dogs are allowed on this route on a six-foot leash.
