Sunset Rock

Sunset Rock is a smooth granite dome and viewpoint above the Kaweah River canyon in Giant Forest. The easy walk from Giant Forest Museum is 1.4 miles round trip; plan one to two hours. It’s a good short outing if you want an open view without taking on a long hike. The forest gives way to the dome, where you can sit and look down the canyon.

The dirt trail is uneven. There is no parking at the trailhead; the closest general parking is across from the museum, with accessible parking beside the museum and at Big Trees Trailhead. Summer parking around Giant Forest is limited, so check the current park newspaper for Sequoia Shuttle stops and routes.

Sunset is the draw, but leave enough light to get back. The trail can be hard to follow after dark, so bring a flashlight or headlamp. Winter and early spring can bring ice and deep snow.

The smooth granite opens onto a broad view of the deep Kaweah River canyon and forested ridges. For a phone photo, keep a strip of the dome in the lower frame: it shows the open rock underfoot and gives the canyon some scale. The classic outlook comes after the walk, not from the parking area.

The walk crosses mixed-conifer forest with red fir, Jeffrey pine, sugar pine and incense cedar. At Sunset Rock, the trees open onto a large granite dome. Much of the Sierra Nevada’s granite in this area sits beneath dense woodland, so this exposed surface gives you a close look at the bedrock underfoot.
