Old Rag Mountain

Old Rag Mountain is an exposed granite summit in Shenandoah’s eastern wilderness, reached by a long, strenuous hike rather than a roadside stop. The classic circuit is 9.4 miles with 2,348 feet of climbing; allow about 7½ hours. If you want a full day on the trail and a hands-on rock scramble, this is the park’s signature outing. If you only want a quick view, choose another stop.

The circuit climbs the Ridge Trail through forest, then works across a jumble of granite boulders and narrow passages before the summit. Some moves call for upper-body strength, and children or shorter hikers may need help. Those tight sections can bottleneck, so even a ticketed day can include waiting. The return descends the Saddle Trail and follows easier fire-road sections, a long finish after the scramble.

The Berry Hollow route reaches the same summit without the rock scramble. Pick it if the narrow boulder passages are the part you want to avoid; the summit is still a hike, not a drive-up viewpoint. Nicholson Hollow is a separate wilderness route that passes Corbin Cabin and stream crossings, rather than a direct substitute for the summit circuit.

The open summit gives you a 360-degree view over wooded ridges and valleys, with granite slabs and boulders right underfoot. Clouds can hide the panorama, and winter may bring ice or snow at this elevation even when lower ground looks clear. For a photo, keep a strip of the pale summit rock in the foreground; it anchors the distant ridges to the exposed place you’re standing.

Old Rag Granite crystallized about 1.06 billion years ago, deep below the surface, during the Grenville mountain-building period. That rock is harder and more resistant than much of the surrounding bedrock, which helps explain why it remains such a prominent peak. Uplift and long erosion later exposed the granite and carved the ridges you see from the summit.

The rocky outcrops support rare and endangered plants. Some areas are closed to protect them from trampling, so keep to open routes and respect the marked closures; the summit’s rock fields are a fragile habitat as well as a place to climb.

Old Rag is approached from the park’s eastern boundary near Nethers, not from Skyline Drive. For the standard circuit, navigate to the Old Rag parking area or trailhead rather than searching only for the mountain; cell service is unreliable nearby and generic directions can send hikers to the wrong place. From March through November, hikers on the Ridge, Saddle, or Ridge Access trails need an advance Old Rag day-use ticket in addition to a park entrance pass. The ticket does not reserve a parking spot. Pets are not allowed on those trails; service animals are welcome. The route does not meet accessibility guidelines.

Treat the circuit as a full-day outing: park guidance says to bring plenty of food and water, and there is no meal stop on the summit. In colder weather, check trail conditions and bring traction for ice or snow at elevation. The standard route’s long climb, exposed scrambling, and extended return make it a poor fit if you are short on time or uncomfortable with steep, narrow rock passages.
