Hawksbill Gap: The Short, Steep Summit Route

Overview

About Hawksbill Summit

Why stop

  • A stone platform opens onto a wide, 360-degree panorama.

Heads up

  • You have to hike uphill for the view, and fog can hide it.
Hawksbill Summit is Shenandoah's highest peak: a rocky summit with a stone viewing platform and Byrd's Nest 2 day shelter. If you want the park's big panorama, this is the hike to do. On a clear day, a full turn around the platform takes in the Shenandoah Valley, the Blue Ridge, and the Virginia Piedmont. The Upper Hawksbill route from Skyline Drive's mile 46.5 parking area is 2.1 miles round trip, climbs 520 feet, and takes about an hour and a half. It's rated the easiest approach, but the climb steepens near the top; in fog, the main payoff can disappear.

Give yourself time to circle the platform: the valley, ridgelines, and Piedmont spread around you rather than sitting in one framed window. For a photo, include some of the summit's foreground rock with the distant ridges so the view has a sense of scale. Clear weather matters here; fog can cover the panorama.

Stay on open groundThe cliffs west of Byrd's Nest 2 and the north slope below the viewing platform are closed to…

The cliffs west of Byrd's Nest 2 and the north slope below the viewing platform are closed to public use to protect fragile rock outcrop ecosystems. The Appalachian Trail corridor stays open through the north-slope closure, but don't wander off the permitted routes. The cool, moist upper slopes are also habitat for the endangered Shenandoah salamander, found only on the park's highest peaks.

A platform with a historyVirginia Senator Harry F. Byrd donated the stone observation platform in 1963.

Virginia Senator Harry F. Byrd donated the stone observation platform in 1963. He had helped bring Shenandoah National Park into being in the 1930s and continued supporting visitor structures, including several shelters known as Byrd's Nests. The summit's shelter and platform make this feel like a proper destination at the top, not just a bare rock ledge.
