The Oaks Overlook

The Oaks Overlook is a roadside pullout on Skyline Drive at milepost 59, looking west from 3,125 feet over a narrow opening into the Shenandoah Valley. The farms and settlements below contrast with the forested mountains of the park. Stop if you like taking in that change from mountain to valley; this is a brief, framed view rather than a wide panorama.

You can reach the view directly from the road, without planning a hike. One visitor described the parking area as small, so it may be a tight stop for larger vehicles or groups. The west-facing view can make a clear sunset a good time for photos, though fog or cloud can hide the valley. The narrow opening naturally frames a closer landscape shot.

Indigenous people cultivated the Shenandoah Valley for centuries, growing corn, squash and beans; European settlers later established farms there. In the mountains, families kept smaller homesteads and grazed livestock. When the park was established, those mountain families were forced from their homes as the mountains were set aside for their wild character. The view holds both the farmed valley and that more difficult park history in one frame.
