Marys Rock is a boulder-strewn summit on Shenandoah’s Blue Ridge, known for its open views above Thornton Gap. It’s a good choice if you want a proper summit perch and a broad look across the valley, rather than another roadside pullout. The payoff takes a moderate hike, and the final rocks are uneven and exposed.

The signed National Park Service route starts at the back of the Panorama parking area on Skyline Drive, mile 31.6. Take the short connector to the Appalachian Trail, turn left (south), then right at the trailpost for the viewpoint; return the same way. This route is 3.7 miles round trip with 1,210 feet of gain; the park estimates about 3½ hours. The trail does not meet ADA accessibility guidelines. A park entrance fee is required, and dogs must stay on a leash no longer than six feet.

There’s another approach from the US 211 parking area beside Panorama Restaurant. Its mileage is measured from a different trailhead, so use the figures above only for the Skyline Drive route. The US 211 start reaches the hike without passing through the park entrance station.

From the outcrop, the signature view opens west across Shenandoah Valley toward Massanutten Mountain. Reaching the full 360-degree panorama means scrambling about 80 feet over rock to the highest part of the summit. The exposed boulders are the foreground; take your time choosing a stable spot before looking for a frame. An NPS photograph from the summit also looks down toward the looping road junction at Thornton Gap.

The rounded, boulder-strewn top is made of basement rock more than a billion years old, left from a mountain range older than the Appalachians. That ancient rock gives Marys Rock its rugged, blocky shape. It’s a different landscape from Shenandoah’s sharper greenstone cliffs, including those at Stony Man and Hawksbill, which formed hundreds of millions of years later.

On the US 211 approach, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy points out stone walls built by the Civilian Conservation Corps along the route. The summit outcrop is also a favored perch for watching fall hawk migration. NPS limits backcountry camping above 3,400 feet here to protect the fragile outcrop ecosystem; follow posted restrictions.

The National Park Service notes that many legends surround the name Marys Rock, but the official material reviewed does not establish a single origin. Treat local naming stories as folklore unless they can be tied to stronger evidence.
