Trail guide
Meadows School Trail is a 2.82-mile out-and-back on an unpaved road from Skyline Drive toward the former school area near the park boundary. The 1.41-mile walk down loses about 950 feet; you climb back up the same track. Allow about two to two and a half hours. Choose it for the old road and local history, not a promised overlook; none is documented.
The mapped route is a ground-surfaced track, more like an old road than a narrow footpath. It descends for most of the way from the Skyline Drive ridge, so the return is the hard part: nearly 1,000 feet of climbing over the same 1.4 miles. The line follows a wooded hillside; dependable details on footing, crossings or trail-side views weren't found.
At the lower end, you reach the vicinity of a former school and two homes that stood beside the road just inside the park boundary. It's unclear whether any buildings remain or whether walkers can continue beyond the boundary, so treat the mapped endpoint as your turnaround.
Start at the west-side parking area at Skyline Drive mile 56.8. A Shenandoah entrance pass is required. Dogs are allowed on this route on a physical leash no longer than six feet.
