North Manitou Island Contact Station is a small information point in North Manitou Village, the settlement that welcomes visitors arriving by boat. It makes sense as part of a wider island visit, not as a reason to cross the lake on its own. The trails, shoreline and village history are the bigger draw.

Plan around an island without servicesNorth Manitou is a self-reliant island outing.

North Manitou is a self-reliant island outing. There is no food service, store or medical center on the island. Drinking water is available at the ranger station, not at this contact station. Check current island access and facilities before arranging a visit, and plan for a longer walk beyond the village rather than expecting a drive-up stop.

A village shaped by island workThe settlement began in the mid-1850s around a cordwood station.

The settlement began in the mid-1850s around a cordwood station. In 1926, island landowners formed the Manitou Island Association, which ran farms and other businesses here. Its work ranged from livestock and orchards to a sugar bush and cutting ice from Lake Manitou. Those activities shaped the surrounding village buildings before the island's later shift toward recreation. Some village buildings are private homes, so keep to public areas.
