Lake Michigan Overlook

Lake Michigan Overlook is stop 9 on the one-way Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a bluff-top viewpoint about 450 feet above the lake. It earns its place for the scale: open water fills the view, and the sandy face drops away below. If you have to choose, this is one of the drive's stops I'd give time to. Stay above the bluff instead of going down to the beach. The return climb is very strenuous, and a descent can loosen rocks onto people below.

From the parking area, a paved path climbs through maple-beech forest, then turns to loose sand before the top. Accessible parking and a vault/composting toilet are listed at this stop, but the steep, sandy approach to the view is not accessible. The old wooden viewing platform came down in spring 2025 after shifting sand undermined its supports; the current visitor information doesn't describe what replaced it.

On a clear day, look south for Empire Bluffs about 4 miles away, Platte Bay at 9 miles, and Point Betsie at 15. Wisconsin is 54 miles across the water to the west. For a photo, keep some of the sandy bluff in the foreground with the lake; it shows the height better than a full-frame horizon.

Lake Michigan is the largest lake entirely within the United States and the world's fourth-largest freshwater lake; its waves helped form these dunes. Shallow water offshore suggests a peninsula once reached about two miles out from this point. The present bluff sits inland behind it, partly sheltered from the strongest open-lake winds. Waves wear at the base, and the bluff loses about a foot a year as sand and rocks slide down. The shifting sand is part of the landscape here, not just a maintenance problem.

Lumberman Pierce Stocking came up with the idea for a road across the dune tops after walking these bluffs. Planning began in the early 1960s, and the road opened in 1967. Stocking operated it until his death in 1976; it became part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in 1977 and was later named for him after public input.

The drive is a 7.4-mile one-way loop with 12 interpretive stops. Allow about two hours if you want to stop at each one. Vehicle access usually runs from late May through late October; during the winter and spring vehicle closure, the route stays open for hiking and walk-in recreation. An entrance pass is required. Trailers aren't allowed, vehicle clearance is limited to 13 feet 6 inches, and the speed limit is 20 mph.
