Stop #9 on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, Lake Michigan Overlook is the showstopper: a dramatic perch roughly 450 feet above the lake with a sweeping horizon of blue and miles of sand below. It’s the view most people picture when they think of this drive, and it earns the hype.

What You’ll See

Expect a massive, open panorama of Lake Michigan and the sculpted sand bluff dropping away beneath your feet. On clear days you can pick out far‑flung shoreline features; travelers also call out big‑sky sunsets thanks to the west‑facing angle. There are a couple of nearby spots along this stop that offer slightly different perspectives, so it’s worth roaming a bit for your favorite angle.

What’s Changed

The wooden viewing platform that once extended toward the edge was removed in 2025 after erosion undermined it. The overlook is still fully visitable and the view is still the star—just know you won’t find a deck here anymore.

Safety: Read This Before You Go Down

That sand slope you see? It’s extremely steep. Going down feels easy; coming back can be brutal. Park warnings here are not for show—only descend if you’re truly prepared for a long, strenuous slog back up.

Wildlife

This is more about the vista than wildlife, but you may spot birds riding the wind along the bluff and lake.

• From the parking area, follow the short but steep paved path to the overlook area.
• Walk between the nearby vantage points to compare views and find less‑busy pockets.

What to Bring

Wind is common up here. Pack a light layer, sunglasses, and protection for blowing sand. Bring water; there’s no running water at this stop. Sturdy footwear helps on the paved‑plus‑sandy surfaces.

Best Time to Visit

For softer light and fewer people, aim for early morning or late afternoon. Sunsets are particularly good here. Peak summer and fall color periods draw the biggest crowds, so timing your stop earlier or later in the day pays off.
