South Manitou Lighthouse Complex is a historic light station on South Manitou Island in Lake Michigan. Its 104-foot tower, keeper’s quarters, and smaller service buildings sit together above the shore, so there’s more here than a quick lighthouse photo. The usual trip starts with a ferry from Leland and a short walk from the island landing; it works best as an anchor stop on an island day.

Make the tower climb countThe climb to the lantern balcony is 117 spiral steps.

The climb to the lantern balcony is 117 spiral steps. The stair is narrow and high, so it’s not a good fit if you’re uneasy with tight stairs or heights. At the top, look across the Manitou Passage, over South Manitou Island, and toward the mainland dunes on clear days. For a photo, include the small red-roofed building by the water; it gives the broad lake view a clear point of scale.

Congress authorized the first lighthouse here in 1838. A station with a 35-foot tower and keeper’s quarters followed in 1858, before construction of the present 104-foot tower began in 1871. Its Third Order Fresnel lens sent light 17¾ miles across the water by focusing it through curved glass prisms. The lantern and stairway were restored after more than 50 years dark, and a replica lens was installed in 2009.

The grounds include the keeper’s quarters and smaller utility buildings, including a whistle shed, oil shed, and brick fuel magazine. They make this feel like a working station rather than an isolated tower: the light, fog signal, fuel, and living space each had a job. Take a look around the buildings before heading back to the landing.

The keepers who lived hereFrom 1840 to 1939, 17 keepers and 32 assistants served at the lighthouse.

From 1840 to 1939, 17 keepers and 32 assistants served at the lighthouse. Their daily work included cleaning glass and lens prisms, polishing brass, tending the light’s clockwork, keeping records, and helping shipwreck survivors. Julia Sheridan became the station’s first assistant keeper and the only woman officially to serve there. In March 1878, Julia, her husband Aaron, and their youngest son drowned when their boat capsized; their descendants later placed gravestones at the island cemetery.

Ships used the Manitou Passage along a busy route linking mainland ports with Chicago and Milwaukee. South Manitou’s deep natural harbor offered the only deep-water refuge between Chicago and the Straits of Mackinac, while nearby hardwood supplied cordwood for steamships. The lighthouse warned ships along the passage, and its fog whistle helped when poor visibility hid the light.
