Overview
Peaceful Valley Ranch is a historic dude ranch site in the park’s South Unit—worth a short stop if you like history and quiet prairie scenery. The buildings have been renovated, there’s a boardwalk linking the ranch house and stable, and the setting is classic badlands. Services are not operating here; think of it as a scenic, historic stop with trail access rather than a fully staffed facility.
What You’ll See
Expect open views of mixed-grass prairie with badlands buttes rising around the Little Missouri River corridor. Look for red scoria caps on nearby hills and the banded clays that define the landscape. Bison are commonly reported in the area, so keep your distance and give them the right of way.
Quick History
The ranch house dates to around 1885 and is the only original ranch house remaining in the South Unit. Several buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site operated for years as a dude ranch offering trail rides, but those rides ceased in 2014. The National Park Service has explored future uses for the property, but there’s no active concession here today.
On-Site Amenities
You’ll find a boardwalk between the ranch house and stable, a few picnic tables, and access to trails from the ranch area. Don’t expect staffed services.
Tips for the Terrain
After rain, bentonite clay gets extremely slick—walking and any unpaved approaches can be treacherous until things dry out. Erosion along the river continually reshapes banks and bottomlands, so stay alert near cutbanks.

- Early morning or late afternoon: softer light for photos and a better chance to spot wildlife.
- Weekdays are typically quieter.
- Avoid immediately after rain; the clay becomes a skating rink.
