Scoria Point Overlook

Overview

Scoria Point Overlook is a quick, signed pullout on the South Unit Scenic Loop Drive. It’s built for “step-out-and-soak-it-in” views rather than a hike, with a sidewalk, exhibit, and a viewing area that frame the badlands perfectly.

What You’ll See

Expect big, layered badlands vistas—ridges and buttes stretching to the horizon. The park’s landscape is carved by the Little Missouri River and reveals bands of bentonite clay, coal, and sandstone, and this overlook gives you an easy, high-impact look at that geology.

Logistics

This is a true roadside stop with parking right at the overlook. There’s no restroom here. The nearest accessible restrooms along the South Unit loop are near the road to Buck Hill and at the Halliday Well Trailhead. The park is open year-round, day and night, but portions of the scenic drives can close in winter due to snow and ice.

Wildlife

Bison, wild horses, elk, and prairie dogs are common across the park. Your best chances to see wildlife are early morning and near dusk. Enjoy them from a safe distance and never approach—give them space and let them set the pace.

Best Time to Visit

For photos, aim for morning or late-day light when the layers pop and the heat is manageable. Midday tends to be bright, hot, and windy, and there’s little shade. In winter, check drive status before heading out.
