Overview
Karu Lookout is the first viewpoint on the Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuṯa. It’s the perfect sampler: a short, moderately challenging out‑and‑back that delivers those “Mars‑like” vistas without committing to the full circuit.
The Walk
From the Valley of the Winds carpark, follow the track to Karu and return the same way (about 2.2 km total, plan on an hour). The path is mostly firm with some rocky and short steep sections—grippy footwear earns its keep. Expect more walkers up to Karu; the track quiets notably if you continue beyond.
What You’ll See
Think wide, wind‑scoured country and the hulking domes of Kata Tjuṯa all around you. The scenery is the drawcard here—big sky, red rock, and that constant breeze living up to the walk’s name.
Cultural Protocols
This is a culturally sensitive men’s area. The park asks that you do not take video or photographs of the Kata Tjuṯa rock formations on this walk. Close‑ups of people, flora and fauna are fine—focus on the small details and leave the sweeping dome shots for designated viewing areas elsewhere.
Planning & Amenities
Fill bottles at the drinking water taps at the start of the track; there’s no water before Karu. Toilets aren’t on the track, so go before you arrive. A daily hop‑on hop‑off service in the park can drop you at the trailhead, and driving from Yulara takes a bit—budget the travel time.
Safety & Closures
On days when the forecast or actual temperature reaches 36°C, the Valley of the Winds walk closes at Karu from 11:00 am—start early. Sun protection, plenty of water, a fly net in warmer months, and sturdy shoes make this far more pleasant. Stay on the marked track and watch the loose rock.
Going Farther
If you’re feeling good, continue toward Karingana Lookout or tackle the full circuit (3–4 hours) where there’s a water point halfway. The park notes the full loop can be easier than going to the second lookout and turning back.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning is best—cooler temps, softer light, and you’ll beat the heat‑closure window. Late morning to midday is typically the busiest up to Karu; afternoons can be pleasant in cooler months but plan around closure times and harsh light.
