Karingaṉa Lookout

Karingana Lookout is the farther of the two named viewpoints on the Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuṯa. The 5.4 km return takes about 2.5 hours and reaches a rocky saddle after the track drops into valley and creek beds, then climbs through steep, stepped sections. The view opens back across the domes and east over a broad valley. If you want the farther lookout, it earns the hike; turn at Karu for the shorter 2.2 km return.

The full Valley of the Winds circuit is 7.4 km and takes about three to four hours. Parks Australia says it is easier than walking to Karingana and retracing your steps, so consider continuing if you have the time and energy. Many walkers turn back at Karingana; the onward circuit is quieter.

This is a Grade 4 route, steep and rocky in places, with many steps. Sturdy footwear helps on the uneven sections. Drinking water is available at the track start and halfway along, but there are no toilets. When the forecast or actual temperature reaches 36°C, the track beyond Karu closes from 11 am, so check access before setting out.

Karingana is in a culturally sensitive men’s area. Parks Australia asks visitors not to take video or photographs of Kata Tjuṯa’s formations anywhere along this walk. Close-up photos of flora, fauna and people are welcome. The request respects Aṉangu beliefs and protects the spirituality of the place; knowledge of the formations is for people with cultural authority to share in person and on location.

The route changes from open scrub to creek beds and a cooler canyon. Near the Karingana saddle, wild figs grow beside the track; the approach passes senna and mulga, with seasonal emu bush and feathered mullamullas. These close details are worth noticing as you walk, while leaving the domes out of photographs.
