“Emerald Bay is ahead, an easy place for a shoreline picnic beside the marina. There’s a shelter and picnic tables, but expect company; this is a popular townside stop.”

This hotel stands at the entrance to Waterton’s townsite, with guest rooms, the Lamp Post Dining Room and the Ram’s Head Pub under one roof. It works as an overnight base, and the restaurant also makes it a meal stop if you’re staying elsewhere. The lodge is the first building as you descend into town, at Mt. View Road and Evergreen Avenue; turn left onto Mt. View Road, then left again for its parking lot.

The Lamp Post Dining Room is on the lakeside, with a large patio facing Emerald Bay on Upper Waterton Lake and the mountains beyond. Look for menu items such as Saskatoon berry pie, elk burger, Alberta steaks and wild boar flatbread. The Ram’s Head Pub is another on-site food option. Dinner reservations are encouraged, so reserve ahead if patio seating matters to your visit.

Rebuilt across a centuryIda Kemmis opened the original Kilmorey as a rooming house in 1926.

Ida Kemmis opened the original Kilmorey as a rooming house in 1926. After it burned in 1933, Oland Scott Construction rebuilt it in 1935; the property expanded in 1940, burned again in 2009, and reopened after reconstruction in 2022. Doug Oland’s company also worked on the nearby Prince of Wales Hotel, tying the lodge into Waterton’s early hotel history. Staff lore includes a ghost story about “Mrs. Kilmorey,” an older woman in a blue floral dress; that is lodge folklore, not documented history.
