Lower Bertha Falls

Lower Bertha Falls is a cascading waterfall on Bertha Creek, reached on an uphill hike from Waterton townsite. The moderate route is 5.2 km return, about 1.5 hours with 175 m of climbing. It opens to views across Upper Waterton Lake before following the creek to the falls. The cascade is modest, so those broad lake and town views are a big part of the payoff. Turn around here for the shorter outing; steep switchbacks continue toward Upper Bertha Falls and Bertha Lake.

From the bridge, look for water fanning over slanted rock and curling into a lower cascade. The bridge gives the most direct view; frame the white water with the reddish bedrock and stream below it. The rocks beside the falls are slippery, so stay on established ground rather than scrambling toward the water.

The Kenow wildfire was detected after lightning near Kenow Mountain on August 30, 2017. It burned 19,303 hectares inside the park, and the Bertha approach crosses affected forest. With the canopy gone, smaller plants had room to take hold; open stretches and regrowth are part of the walk now.

A site-specific geology account identifies the falls' exposed rock as part of the Altyn Formation. Water runs between upturned edges of bedrock, then bends sharply into the lower channel, giving the cascade its fan shape.
