Bertha Lake

The trail starts at the parking lot on Evergreen South, 350 m south of Cameron Falls. It climbs to a view over Upper Waterton Lake, follows the creek past Lower Bertha Falls, then rises on steep switchbacks. There are brief views of Upper Bertha Falls on the way up. Visitors often find this upper section strenuous. The trailhead is in an avalanche path, so check the current Bertha-Townsite advisory before setting out.

At the top, a short path follows the lake below its cliffs and peaks. Give yourself time to walk along the water; the mountain basin is the payoff, and the shore offers a quieter pause after the climb. For a wide photo, frame the blue-green water with the evergreen shoreline and cliffs in view, rather than filling the shot with water alone.

The route moves from forest along the creek into exposed slopes. Sections cross terrain burned in the 2017 Kenow wildfire, which affected about 38% of the park. The open switchbacks have broad Waterton Valley views but little shade. The final climb also passes exposed Precambrian rock, one of the park's oldest geologic stories.

Bertha Lake Camp sits on the shore. Parks Canada's backcountry campgrounds have tent pads, food-storage bins, picnic tables and pit toilets; water sources need to be treated or boiled. Overnight stays require a backcountry permit and reservation, and cooking at camp requires a gas stove. The campground is reached on foot, not by road.
