The Maui Butterfly Farm is a small, family-run educational attraction in Olowalu, centered on a walk-in butterfly flight house. A guide leads a 45-minute tour through Hawaiʻi’s butterflies and their earlier life stages, including caterpillars and chrysalises. Go if you want a close, guided look at insects; this is a specialized, relatively short stop.
This is a timed visit with limited group spaces. The farm does not take guests without a reservation, and its tours often sell out, so book ahead. The address is 820 Olowalu Village Road; driving directions are sent with the booking confirmation.
The flight house puts butterflies and caterpillar stages close enough to watch in detail. Visitors often describe butterflies landing on flowers or on people, and hands-on time with caterpillars; some also mention praying mantises. A knowledgeable guide is a big part of the outing, especially for children who are curious about small creatures.
Education and butterfly propagation are part of the farm’s stated mission. It closed after the August 2023 fires and reopened in Olowalu in 2024. The owners described its return as a way to welcome local residents and visitors during recovery.
