Fishing Bridge Visitor Center and Trailside Museum

This historic visitor center and trailside museum sits near Yellowstone Lake’s north shore, about a mile off the Grand Loop Road on East Entrance Road. Come for the lake and bird exhibits, a ranger’s help, and a look at the old building; a short walk down to the shore makes the visit feel complete. The center is seasonal and closes for winter, so check current access before making the detour.

The approach is part of the idea: the original design lets visitors see through the museum toward Yellowstone Lake. From the building, steps and an accessible ramp lead shoreward. It’s an easy pairing: spend a little time with the exhibits, then take the view outside.

The displays focus on Yellowstone Lake’s ecology, especially its birds, with historic specimens and a map of the lake and its geology. Look up as well as around: the two wrought-iron chandeliers are decorated with antlers, ram horns, and bighorn sheep skulls. Rangers can answer questions, and a small bookstore sells books and souvenirs.

Herbert Maier designed the stone-and-log building, completed in 1931 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1987. The Trailside Museum idea met a new need as cars replaced stagecoaches and guided tours: motorists needed places to learn about what they were seeing on their own. In 1928, Yellowstone superintendent Horace Albright proposed four museums, with Rockefeller foundation funding and advice from the American Association of Museums.

Maier used local rubble masonry and natural materials in what became known as Parkitecture. The building was one of several prototypes for park buildings elsewhere in the country. Many of its display cases were designed and built by Dr. Carl Russell, then rebuilt and reinstalled in 2021–22.
