Goodsir Pass Trail

Goodsir Pass Trail is a 28.4 km one-way backcountry crossing from Ottertail Parking Lot in Yoho, along the Ottertail Valley through McArthur Creek campground, over Goodsir Pass, and on to Helmet Falls campground in Kootenay. It connects with the Rockwall route; it is not the full Rockwall traverse. The connected mapped route measures 28.4 km (17.7 miles), while current route guidance gives 25 km and the older map's labeled legs add to about 29 km. Check the current itinerary before setting out and plan for two to three days.

The long approach follows the Ottertail River through forest to McArthur Creek. Beyond camp, the trail climbs steeply through subalpine larch meadows and open alpine slopes to Goodsir Pass. The listed elevation gain is about 915 m. From the pass, the Goodsir peaks are the main payoff; marmots may be out among the rocks. This is where the larch slopes and peaks make a worthwhile view to stop for.

A backcountry permit is required for overnight travel in both parks, and camps must be reserved in designated backcountry campgrounds. You also need a national park entry pass. The route ends at Helmet Falls campground, away from a road, so plan the next hiking leg and your eventual Kootenay exit before you start.

Some stretches may not be regularly maintained. Navigation skills and the ability to ford streams safely are essential. Higher passes can remain snowbound into late June, and snow is possible at elevation even in summer. Pets are welcome in the backcountry but must stay leashed and under physical control in both parks.
