Hiking Tocher Ridge Trail

Tocher Ridge is a strenuous out-and-back from Natural Bridge to a former fire lookout above Amiskwi Pass. The listed route is 17.9 km each way, or 35.8 km (22.2 miles) return, and is intended for very strong hikers. Its two described sections add up to 17.1 km one way, while the connected mapped corridor is 16.9 km. Treat the distance as approximate and plan for roughly 34–36 km return. The listed 8+ hours assumes hiking and biking; walking both ways is likely around 14 hours, an estimate before breaks.

The route and climbStart at Natural Bridge Parking on Emerald Lake Road, about 4 km west of Field. The first 12.

Start at Natural Bridge Parking on Emerald Lake Road, about 4 km west of Field. The first 12.3 km follows the riverside approach beside the Kicking Horse River and continues along Otterhead Trail. Bikes are permitted on this approach to the end of Otterhead. From there, a steep 4.8 km climb gains about 915 m to the ridge. A route report describes rough old road and doubletrack on the approach and brush or deadfall on the climb; conditions can change, so carry a current map and expect a demanding final ascent.

The mapped line follows connected paths from near the parking area to the ridge, but its endpoint is about 0.5 km from the Tocher Ridge SE map marker. The exact final tread to the lookout is not confirmed in the available mapping. Check the ridge approach on a current topographic map before setting out.

The ridge was identified as a fire lookout site in 1941, and a lookout was built there in the mid-1960s to watch Amiskwi Pass and the Kicking Horse River. It served for only a few years before being abandoned. One trip report describes the tower as still standing, but its current condition has not been verified, so treat the lookout as a former site rather than counting on a visit inside a sound building.

Planning the dayThe route is for very strong hikers.

The route is for very strong hikers. The one-way profile lists 1,385 m of ascent and 265 m of descent; retracing the route adds uphill on the return. The final ridge climb alone rises about 915 m in 4.8 km. The published 8+ hour estimate includes biking the long approach, so allow substantially longer on foot. Camping is not permitted on this route. Food, drinking water and trailhead facilities were not confirmed; carry what you need and check current park conditions and restrictions before leaving.
