Lake Oesa Trail

Lake Oesa is a steepening out-and-back above Lake O’Hara. Allow about 6.4 km (4 mi) return, 240 m (790 ft) of climbing, and 2–3 hours on the trail. From Le Relais, follow the shoreline path to the Lake Oesa junction, climb to the lake, then return the same way. The 11 km access road is separate from the hike.

Day visits to Lake O’Hara use a reserved seasonal shuttle from the parking lot at the access-road entrance. The bus drops visitors at Le Relais, the start of this mapped route. Other access options include reserved overnight stays or walking the road. Walking the 11 km road each way adds 22 km before the hike, turning it into a much longer day. Check access arrangements before setting out.

The shoreline approach reaches the Oesa junction near the lake’s eastern end. From there, switchbacks climb to a cliff, then cross broad talus and scree swept by avalanches each year. A stunted forest leads to steep rocky outcrops crossed on stone steps built by Lawrence Grassi. Expect uneven footing and take care on loose rock.

Beyond the steps, the Yukness Ledge route branches near Lake Victoria. Stay on the Oesa trail through delicate meadows enclosed by copper-coloured quartzite cliffs. Small pools of Oesa Creek sit below the path. Keep to the trail across the fragile alpine ground.

A short grassy rise and a trough cut through bedrock lead to tilted slabs at Lake Oesa. The turquoise basin beneath steep rock walls is the payoff; the Pexels hero photo shows this exact destination. Enjoy the lake, then retrace the same route. The longer alpine routes that join near here are separate hikes.

Higher Lake O’Hara routes can remain snowbound into late June, with avalanche hazard possible; check current park conditions. Pets cannot ride the shuttle, and the trail’s pet rule could not be confirmed, so verify it before choosing an access plan. A small seasonal concession at Le Relais is a separate shuttle-stop amenity, not a trail-side supply point.
