Best time to go
March to June is a good window, when curlew, lapwing, oystercatcher and redshank may be around the wet meadows and old lake bed, with sand martins over the water. In July the shallows can carry a spread of yellow water-lilies. Winter flooding turns the flat ground into feeding habitat, and wigeon, teal and snipe are possible, sometimes whooper swans. Nothing is guaranteed on any given day.
For light and mood, come early morning or late afternoon, since midday tends to flatten the fells.
