Before you go

Best time to go

Spring and autumn, and weekdays generally, are the calmest. Summer and weekends are busier. Clear, dry evenings are the ones to aim for if you want a fire and a look at the stars.

Facilities

The washblock is simple but well kept: five flushing toilets, urinals, five showers with hot water, several basins, hand dryers, a hairdryer for the ladies, razor charging and a baby-change point. Outside there are washing-up sinks, a freezer and fresh drinking water. The shop stocks snacks, firewood and camping essentials, and fresh sourdough pizzas are made on selected days by pre-order. An electric vehicle charging point is available to customers, but it has to be requested and booked ahead.

“Near Marsett, the wet runnels on Marsett Rigg hold a plant that eats insects. Common butterwort keeps sticky leaves low to the ground, where they catch small insects and slowly curl around them.”

A family-run camping meadow on the edge of the hamlet of Marsett, tucked into Raydale with open valley views on most sides. It is tent-focused and non-electric, so the mood is quiet and back-to-basics rather than full-service touring park. Cars park away from the pitches, and wheelbarrows are there for shifting kit across the grass.

What makes it distinctLarge, neatly defined grass pitches with room to spread out
  • Large, neatly defined grass pitches with room to spread out
  • A campfire pit on every pitch, with firewood sold in the small on-site shop
  • No Wi-Fi and no mobile signal, which is the main reason many people come
  • No music at any time, and quiet hours from 9:30pm to 7:30am
  • Free-range chickens and goats wandering the site

Lake Semerwater, one of Yorkshire's natural lakes, is a short walk away and is used for fishing, canoeing, windsurfing and sailing. Beyond that, the valley and surrounding fells give you walking straight from the tent, and on clear nights the lack of light and signal makes for very good stargazing.

Arrival and practicalitiesDo not rely on the postcode alone.
  • Do not rely on the postcode alone. Satnav may not take you onto the right track, so follow the Stable Fell Camping signs after the chapel and use the designated parking area near the barn.
  • Tents only. Campervans, motorhomes and caravans are not accepted, and there are no walk-ins. Roof tents on cars or trucks are by prior arrangement only, and no commercial vehicles.
  • No disposable BBQs. Use the pitch firepit instead.
  • Dogs are welcome but must be on leads at all times, with mess cleaned up, because there is livestock around. Use the gates and do not climb the old dry-stone walls.

The fields are open, so there is little natural shelter from wind or driving rain and you need a tent and pegs you trust. At peak times the washroom can feel cramped and the sinks can queue. This is a basic, nature-led site, so if you want hook-ups, connectivity or lots of on-site entertainment, it will not suit you.
