About Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite

Why stop

  • Easy walk into Hawes for pubs, shops and food
  • Useful dog exercise field with Dales walks from the gate

Heads up

  • Members-only site aimed at caravans and motorhomes
  • Towing access needs care on the final approach
This is a touring campsite on Brunt Acres Road, tucked between the River Ure and the market town of Hawes in Wensleydale, a dale known for its cheese. Hawes sits at roughly 850 feet above sea level, making it one of England's highest market towns, and the surrounding hills are visible from the pitches. The appeal is practical: a peaceful, well-kept base with hardstanding pitches, useful facilities, a good dog exercise field and the town about a ten-minute walk away.

Before you go

Best time to go

Midweek or outside school-holiday periods gives you a quieter version of the site. Early morning or late afternoon are the better windows for walking, with softer light across the surrounding hills. Dales weather changes quickly, so pack layers and waterproofs, plus proper walking footwear for anything beyond the pitch. A downloaded map is worth having given the patchy connectivity.

Pitches and facilities

  • 119 touring pitches, with standard and serviced electric hardstanding options, and awnings allowed
  • Toilet block, family washroom, baby changing, dishwashing area and laundry
  • Disabled facilities including a disabled shower room
  • Motorhome service point and drive-over motorhome waste disposal
  • Club shop, gas, games room, BBQs allowed and holiday cottages
  • Late-arrivals area with electric hook-up
  • Dog walk on site and from site, including a well-liked dog exercise field
  • Wi-Fi is provided, though it can be unreliable in practice, and TV reception is poor, so download maps and anything you need offline before you arrive

Getting thereIf you are towing, follow the recommended final approach rather than sat-nav.

If you are towing, follow the recommended final approach rather than sat-nav. Coming from the east, leave the A684 on the outskirts of Hawes onto the road signed Muker/Hardraw; the site is on the right in about 0.25 mile. The M6 junction 37 route via Sedbergh is not advised for towing, as it is narrow and difficult.

Once parked, the walk into Hawes takes about ten minutes, with a pub, shop and the village within one mile and a Spar around 0.25 mile away. Reception keeps local walk maps.

The Dales and the Pennine Way are on the doorstep, and there is a Pennine Way circular from the site of roughly 4 miles (6.4 km), about 2 hours, with an optional extra 45 minutes to reach Hardraw Force. Check the route and local conditions before setting off rather than assuming it will be obvious underfoot.

Honest drawbacksMembership is required, which rules the site out for casual overnighters
  • Membership is required, which rules the site out for casual overnighters
  • Wi-Fi can be poor and TV reception is officially described as poor
  • It works as a convenient, peaceful base rather than a destination in its own right, so the interest lies in Hawes and the walks around it
  • Towing access needs care, and the tempting-looking Sedbergh approach is best avoided
