Overview

About Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre

Why stop

  • Live cheesemaking and tasting make the local food tradition tangible

Heads up

  • Popular at demonstration times and more indoor attraction than scenic stop
This is a working creamery in Hawes, not a gift shop with a cheese counter. Milk comes from local Dales farms, the cheese is made by hand using traditional recipes, and Yorkshire Wensleydale carries protected geographical status, granted in 2013. The Dale's cheesemaking story stretches back centuries to Cistercian monks who brought the skills from Normandy, and the creamery calls itself custodian of 875 years of that tradition. It is also the sensible move on a wet day, when the fells are socked in and you want something indoors.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Allow about 30 minutes for the demonstration and at least 30 more for the self-guided section, plus browsing time. Demonstrations run several times through the day, so book or check which one you want rather than turning up and hoping. It gets busy around demonstration times, and the coffee shop can fill up at peak hours.

Access, dogs and free entry areas

The visitor centre is fully accessible with free onsite parking, including Blue Badge bays and onsite toilets. Routes between buildings involve mild slopes, some uneven surfaces and narrow spots. Indoors expect strong dairy smells, background noise and lighting effects, and no hearing assistance system. Dogs are welcome only in the coffee shop and garden via the garden entrance; assistance dogs go everywhere.

More about Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre

What actually happensThe paid Cheese Experience starts with a cheesemaking demonstration, where experts talk through…

The paid Cheese Experience starts with a cheesemaking demonstration, where experts talk through crafting Yorkshire Wensleydale by hand and making butter, then continues as a self-guided tour through exhibits on a thousand years of artisan cheesemaking in the Dales. It finishes with a guided tasting covering the range, flavour, texture and what to eat it with, which is the part most people remember. You watch and learn through the visitor areas rather than wandering the production floor.

The honest catchIt is an indoor, food-focused attraction, not a viewpoint or a walk.

It is an indoor, food-focused attraction, not a viewpoint or a walk. The cheese and gift shop, coffee shop and restaurant are free to browse if the ticketed experience is not your thing.
