Tuolumne Grove

Quieter sequoia grove with a short hike and a tunnel tree

Overview

Tuolumne Grove is the mellow way to meet giant sequoias: about two dozen mature trees in a peaceful mixed-conifer forest, reached by an easy-to-follow path along the old Big Oak Flat Road. It’s a reverse hike—down first, then a steady climb back up—so the workout is on the return.

What You’ll See

  • Majestic sequoias in a quieter setting than the park’s marquee grove.
  • The historic Dead Giant Tunnel Tree—a crowd-pleasing photo spot.
  • A 0.5-mile self-guided nature loop among massive trunks and downed giants.

Trail at a Glance

  • Distance: 2.5–2.7 miles round trip
  • Elevation: roughly 400–700 feet of gain on the way back
  • Time: plan on 1–2 hours at a relaxed pace
  • Route: Wide, old road surface to the grove, then a short loop among the trees

Seasonality & Conditions

Open year‑round from the west via Highway 120 near Crane Flat. Expect snow and ice in winter; the grove becomes a lovely snowshoe/ski outing with far fewer people. In summer, it’s shaded but the climb back at around 6,200 feet can feel stout.

Logistics

  • Parking is limited at the trailhead; arrive early in peak season.
  • Vault toilets at the parking area; no drinking water—bring your own.
  • Pets are allowed only on the paved road/trail through the grove (not on side paths).
  • A few benches near the bottom make nice rest spots.

Best Time to Visit

  • Early morning beats the parking rush and gives soft, flattering light among the trees.
  • Late afternoon is great for photos and cooler temps on the climb out.
  • Winter offers serene, often uncrowded conditions if you’re prepared for snow/ice.

Bottom Line

If you want serenity with still-impressive giants, this is a gem. For sheer numbers and famous named trees, Mariposa Grove wins—but Tuolumne Grove delivers the quieter, easier-to-digest sequoia experience.

Pros

  • Quieter sequoia experience than Mariposa Grove
  • Historic tunnel tree and a short self-guided loop

Cons

  • Steep uphill return
  • Parking is limited
  • No drinking water available

Tips

  • Bring more water than you think you need—there’s none at the trailhead.
  • Arrive before 9am in summer to snag a parking spot.
  • Pace yourself for the steady uphill return; it feels tougher at elevation.
  • In winter, pack traction or snowshoes and expect icy sections.
  • Pets are allowed only on the paved road—skip the side trails with them.
