Overview

About El Capitan from Tamarack Creek

Why go

  • Crosses creeks and Ribbon Meadow before a high-country summit view.

Heads up

  • A full day of sustained climbing.
  • Published mileages vary by several miles.
El Capitan from Tamarack Creek is a hard, full-day out-and-back to the summit, not a shortcut to the famous face. The best-supported distance is about 16 miles round trip, with an 8-mile mapped corridor each way. Published figures disagree, including a miles-and-kilometers pair that does not convert, so leave some margin. Other accounts put total climbing near 3,500 feet, while a lower figure is also published; the drops into creeks and meadow make the return a real climb too. Allow about 10 hours.

Parking

Start at Tamarack Creek on Tioga Road near Tamarack Flat. A trip report describes a small parking area, but the exact pullout and capacity are unverified. Overnight parking is prohibited along Tioga Road and its lots.

Safety

Expect long, sustained climbs and several creek crossings. Ribbon Meadow can be wet early in the season, and snow on the high rim can make footing treacherous.

Start at Tamarack Creek on Tioga Road and follow the old-road corridor through conifer forest, including lodgepole pine, sugar pine, and white fir. Several small creeks break up the approach; Cascade Creek is about 2.5 miles from the start and has a footbridge. From the low point near the Old Big Oak Flat Road junction, the route climbs steeply, gaining about 1,900 feet over roughly 2.8 miles, then drops to Ribbon Creek and a broad wet meadow. The trees open around this flower-rich stretch. Ribbon Meadow can be boggy early in the season, and a second long climb follows.

The final approach reaches the rim at the back of El Capitan and climbs around a deep gully crack to a short spur at the summit block. The reward is a broad view across Yosemite Valley and the high country, with Half Dome to the east. The summit's rounded top doesn't put you above the outside face, so don't expect to look straight down El Capitan's famous wall. The open rock makes a good frame for the distant ridgelines and valley below.

The famous wall from aboveEl Capitan rises to 7,569 feet, with a sheer face roughly 3,600 feet high from its base.

El Capitan rises to 7,569 feet, with a sheer face roughly 3,600 feet high from its base. This route reaches the top from the back, so the valley and Half Dome become the view instead of the vertical profile most people recognize from below. A continuation toward Eagle Peak belongs to a longer hike; turn around at El Capitan for this out-and-back.
