Parking

Use the day-use parking areas at O’Shaughnessy Dam and follow signs across the dam to the trail. Hetch Hetchy Road is open to vehicles only from sunrise to sunset and can close in winter weather; check access before driving and plan to be back before the gate closes.

Safety

Carry water and sun protection for the exposed shoreline. Watch for rattlesnakes and poison oak. Spring spray and high water can make the bridge area wet and hazardous; turn back if the crossing is unsafe. Pets are prohibited on trails, and swimming and boating are prohibited in the reservoir.

The Wapama Falls Trail is a moderate out-and-back from O’Shaughnessy Dam to the bridges beneath Wapama Falls, then back the same way. Plan on about 5 miles round trip and roughly three hours, with around 500 feet of climbing. The walk combines a short engineered start, a long stretch above Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, and a close view of one of the valley’s major waterfalls. Expect an uneven, sometimes rocky path and a lot of sun; this is more exposed than a shaded lakeside stroll.

Begin by crossing O’Shaughnessy Dam and passing through a short tunnel cut into granite. The trail then follows the reservoir shoreline through small coves and rolling rises, with steep granite walls above the water. Tueeulala Falls appears across the reservoir, and the route continues to Wapama Falls, where footbridges bring hikers close to the cascades. Turn around here and retrace the same corridor. The trail continues beyond Wapama toward Rancheria Falls, but that is a much longer hike and a different destination.

The waterfall is most forceful in spring and early summer, when spray can soak the bridges and nearby rocks. High water can make the falls crossing dangerous or impassable; wet granite is slick, so do not press on if the crossing looks unsafe. Flow often dwindles by late summer. Lower elevation gives Hetch Hetchy an early wildflower season: look for lupine and monkeyflowers along the trail, and leave them in place.

The route rolls up and down rather than climbing steadily, and its rocky patches take more care than the mileage alone suggests. Shade is limited for much of the shoreline, and warm weather can make the exposed walk feel harder. Carry water and sun protection, watch for rattlesnakes and poison oak, and allow enough time to return before the access road closes. Pets are not allowed on the hiking trails. Swimming and boating are prohibited in the reservoir.

Hetch Hetchy’s present shoreline sits in a valley where Indigenous people lived for thousands of years; the name is linked to a Miwok word for edible grasses. The valley’s transformation into a reservoir followed a long public fight over San Francisco’s water supply and preserving Yosemite. The 1913 Raker Act authorized the dam, built in stages from 1923 to 1938. Today the reservoir remains part of the Bay Area water system, while the surrounding granite cliffs and waterfalls still define the walk.

Access and a longer optionReach the trailhead by car via Hetch Hetchy Road.

Reach the trailhead by car via Hetch Hetchy Road. Vehicle access is limited to sunrise through sunset, and winter weather can close the road, so check conditions before driving and leave a margin for the return. If you want a longer outing, the route toward Rancheria Falls continues beyond Wapama; it is about 13.4 miles round trip and involves substantially more climbing. For a half-day visit, the Wapama Falls out-and-back is the shorter choice.
