Jordan Pond Gatehouse

Jordan Pond Gatehouse is a historic stone-and-timber complex where Acadia’s carriage paths meet Park Loop Road, near Jordan Pond House. It’s worth a quick look if you’re already passing through this part of the park, especially if you like architecture. The lodge is staff housing, not a public interior; don’t enter or look in the windows.

The complex runs from the carriage house to the gatekeeper’s lodge through an open-air passage, with a separate gatehouse joined by a masonry fence. Green seam-faced granite forms the lower story of the lodge, with red brick set between dark timbers above. Look for the square towers, steep tiled roofs and the two rows of birdhouse holes in a carriage-house dormer. If you can see it from a public route, try to include the passage and gatehouse in one frame; the long layout is the detail that sets it apart.

John D. Rockefeller Jr. commissioned architect Grosvenor Atterbury, working with John Thompkins, in 1931; the gatehouses were finished in 1932 and donated to the park. Bells were meant to let carriage drivers or mounted riders signal a keeper. The gatehouses marked entrances to the carriage-road network, though they were never used as actual gatekeeper posts.

Landscape architect Beatrix Farrand advised planting vines on the facades, ferns and shrubs near sharp corners, and a terraced lawn that would preserve native trees. The lodge was first occupied by the family of Rockefeller’s chief engineer, Paul D. Simpson.

The site sits by Park Loop Road where carriage paths branch toward routes including Sargent Mountain Path. A dedicated visitor parking area or viewing point for the gatehouse isn’t identified, so don’t count on a formal stop right at the building. Keep to public routes and leave the staff residence alone.
