Schoodic Head

Schoodic Head is a 440-foot summit on Acadia’s quieter Schoodic Peninsula. On a clear day, the view opens over forest to ocean and mountains. It’s a good stop if you want a higher, inland view between shoreline stops; if low cloud hides the horizon, the panorama loses much of its appeal.

The usual approaches include a narrow, one-mile gravel summit road and trails. A 2.5-mile loop from Blueberry Hill links Alder, Schoodic Head, and Anvil trails through forest and onto a granite ridgeline. East Trail is the steeper option, climbing quickly by switchbacks. Expect uneven footing on these trails; they are not accessible paths. Check access before setting out, since road and trail conditions can change.

Dark diabase dikes cut through the peninsula’s pink granite, the result of later volcanic rock filling cracks in the older stone. Look for the contrast in the bare rock around the summit; one dark band crosses the granite slabs. Along the more exposed coast, waves and tides have also carved the headlands.

There’s no food service or reported summit facility. The park lists restrooms and drinking water at Frazer Point, farther around the peninsula. For photos, frame the summit rock in the foreground and look out across the forest toward the water; the broader ocean-and-mountain view is clearest on a clear day.
