Hiking St. Sauveur and Acadia Mountain Loop

What you getSt. Sauveur and Acadia Mountain Loop is a challenging 3.

St. Sauveur and Acadia Mountain Loop is a challenging 3.9-mile loop from Acadia Mountain Trailhead on ME 102. It links two summits with a rugged wooded connector between them; allow 2–4 hours. Choose it for a proper half-day mountain walk with open granite and views over Somes Sound. Skip it if you want an easy stroll or a panorama from the summit alone: St. Sauveur's wooded top has no view. The route gives you more as you move—Echo Lake glimpses, open ledges, two different mountain tops and a descent through forest. Both directions include steep climbs and descents on the mountains' east faces.

Start on St. SauveurCross ME 102 from the parking lot and climb over open granite to the junction.

Cross ME 102 from the parking lot and climb over open granite to the junction. Following the signed loop direction, turn right for St. Sauveur. The climb eases into forest, with occasional views north to Echo Lake. The summit marker sits among the trees, so keep going rather than stopping there for a panorama. The trail continues through the woods toward the connector; watch junctions closely, because several paths share the same small area.

Take the connector back toward Acadia MountainPast the St.

Past the St. Sauveur summit, take the short left connector to the Valley Peak Trail for the Somes Sound side of the walk, then follow its steep, rugged descent through forest. Going straight past the summit instead reaches Valley Peak; returning to the loop by the Valley Peak Trail adds about 0.7 mile. At the next junction, continue toward Acadia Mountain. The left turn onto Man o' War Brook fire road is a shorter way back to the Acadia Mountain Trailhead, but it skips the Acadia Mountain climb and the second half of the named loop.

Climb Acadia MountainThe full route rises steeply up Acadia Mountain's east side over loose rock and ledges.

The full route rises steeply up Acadia Mountain's east side over loose rock and ledges. There are two peaks; after the second, the trail drops through forest and occasionally opens to Echo Lake and the surrounding mountains. It brings you back to the St. Sauveur–Acadia Mountain junction. Take your time finding footholds on the ledges, and use a map at the crossings rather than treating every branching path as part of the loop.

Granite, exposure and the viewExpect uneven footing and short, steep scrambling sections throughout.

Expect uneven footing and short, steep scrambling sections throughout. The open granite slopes run close to cliff edges, and the park recommends choosing dry weather; wet rock makes the exposed sections a poor bet. This is not an accessible route, and it is a poor fit for anyone uneasy with steep edges. For a trail photo, include a stretch of bare granite in the foreground and frame across Somes Sound—the rock gives the broad water and wooded ridges some scale.

The Acadia Mountain roadside lot is on ME 102 across from Echo Lake, just past the Ikes Point entrance; the trail begins across the highway, so cross carefully. A vault toilet is available, but there is no accessible restroom at the trailhead. There is no activity fee or reservation, but you need an Acadia park entrance pass. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet, though the park discourages bringing them on this route because of an iron rung and steep sections.
