Mount Cook Airport

Mount Cook Airport is a small alpine airfield on State Highway 80, about six kilometres before Mount Cook Village. For visitors, its main purpose is as the base for booked ski-plane and helicopter trips over the Southern Alps, including some alpine and glacier landings. It is a departure point rather than a conventional passenger-terminal attraction; free parking is available for flight customers.

Selected itineraries open views of Aoraki/Mount Cook, Tasman Glacier, Tasman Terminal Lake, Grand Plateau and Hochstetter Icefall. Some include a glacier or alpine landing, but not every flight does, and exact landing sites depend on weather and glacier conditions. If a flight is a priority, book it early enough in your stay to leave room to reschedule.

Glentanner is a separate airport. Stay on State Highway 80 toward the village; Mount Cook Airport is about six kilometres before it. Check your chosen operator's directions and booking for check-in instructions. A café or public water point could not be confirmed here, so bring what you will need for the drive and any wait.

The airfield opened in 1936 and later carried scheduled passenger services. Today its visitor role centers on scenic and alpine flights, with the high mountain setting part of the experience.
