Hooker Valley Track

Hooker Valley Track is a 10 km out-and-back from White Horse Hill Car Park to Hooker Lake, with three swing bridges and views toward Aoraki / Mount Cook. It follows a formed gravel path with some steps through a broad valley rather than climbing to a summit. The walk takes about three hours at a steady pace; allow around 3½ to four hours if you stop at the lookouts and lake. The long distance is the main commitment, not a steep grade. This is a popular walk, so the bridges, lake shore and parking area are calmer earlier in the day.

The track starts at the end of Hooker Valley Road. Signposted short detours lead to Freda’s Rock, named for mountaineer Freda Du Faur, and the Alpine Memorial. Mueller Lookout sits just before the first swing bridge. This first section is about 1 km one way; turn back from here for a roughly 2 km outing if you want a taste of the valley without walking to the lake. The full-route distance does not include wandering around those side stops.

After the first bridge, the track crosses rocky hummocks of glacial moraine for about 1.5 km to Kakīroa / Mount Sefton View Lookout. Mueller Lake and Mueller Glacier sit below Kakīroa / Mount Sefton, so this is a good place to pause and take in how much of the valley is shaped by ice. The surface is still a formed gravel track, but the uneven moraine and steps make it less like a paved promenade. The second bridge crosses the Hooker River on a 189 m suspension span.

From bridge two, it is about 2.5 km to Hooker Lake. The valley floor widens and tussock replaces much of the rocky ground; a third and final bridge leads to the lake shore and the turnaround. Toilets are about 15 minutes beyond the second bridge. Aoraki / Mount Cook and the Southern Alps / Kā Tiritiri o te Moana fill the view at the lake, where icebergs sometimes float in summer. Return to White Horse Hill the same way, taking in the bridges and changing views from the opposite direction.

Hooker Valley is sacred to Ngāi Tahu and has Tōpuni status, a symbolic cloak of protection that reflects its significance. Alpine plants include celmisia and the Mount Cook buttercup, or kōpukupuku, the world’s largest buttercup. Kea and kārearea (New Zealand falcon) may be heard or seen along the track, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Alpine weather can change quickly, bringing strong wind, rain or snow. The exposed bridges can be windy, and shaded sections may become very icy in winter; microspikes and hiking poles help in those conditions. Stay on the formed track, which is designed to avoid avalanche risk. Hooker Lake is extremely cold, and frozen lake ice and icebergs are unstable: stay out of the water, off the ice and off the icebergs. Dogs are not allowed. White Horse Hill is a paid car park; toilets, treated drinking water and a public shelter are at the campground near the start, with another toilet farther up the track.
