Kea Point Track

Kea Point Track is an easy out-and-back from White Horse Hill Campground to a viewing deck above Mueller Lake. Plan about 1.9 miles round trip from the campground, including the short access walk to the mapped trail; published totals vary a little, so treat that as an estimate. The walking track itself takes about an hour return, with longer worth allowing if you want to stay at the deck. It’s a good pick when you want to see the glacier country without committing to a long climb. The gravel surface and gentle rises make it manageable, though loose stones and uneven patches mean it isn’t a paved stroll.

This route begins at White Horse Hill Campground and car park at the end of Hooker Valley Road. The village start near the DOC Visitor Centre follows a longer approach to the same viewing deck: DOC gives two hours return from there, compared with one hour from White Horse Hill. That extra approach is not included in this route or its distance. Parking fees apply at White Horse Hill. The campground has toilets and treated drinking water; in winter, water is turned off and facilities are reduced. The village café is a separate stop, not something to count on along the walk.

From the campground, follow the signed Kea Point route through subalpine grassland and scrub. The path gently winds toward the gray Mueller Glacier moraine wall, rising in small, steady increments rather than one hard climb. Most of the way is formed gravel. There are some loose stones and boardwalk over wetter ground, so watch your footing where the surface changes. At the junctions, keep to the Kea Point signs; the Hooker Valley and Sealy Tarns walks are separate routes, even though they share this area.

The deck is the payoff. It sits above Mueller Glacier lake and faces the moraine, with Aoraki / Mount Cook, Mount Sefton, The Footstool and the Hooker Valley in the wider view. Cloud can hide the higher peaks, but the lake and the steep moraine wall still make the endpoint distinctive. For a photo, keep some of the pale lake and gray moraine in the foreground; that gives the snowy peaks scale and shows where you’re standing.

The walk crosses a landscape changed by a 1913 stream breakthrough from the glacier. The stream cut through toward the site of the original Hermitage and damaged the building. That story fits the view from Kea Point: the moraine isn’t just a backdrop, but part of a valley still marked by glacier water and shifting sediment.

Kea Point is the short, gentle choice. If you want a much more demanding outing, Sealy Tarns branches from the same start and climbs steeply by about 2,200 steps, with a reported 600 m height gain and a three-to-four-hour return. That’s a different commitment, not an extension included in this trail. There are no dogs allowed in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. At Kea Point, stay on the marked path: the lookout sign warns of unstable cliff edges and fragile vegetation. Snow or ice can make the route slippery in winter, and alpine weather changes quickly.
