Sealy Tarns

Sealy Tarns is a small group of alpine ponds on a shelf high on the Sealy Range, above Hooker Valley. It’s a serious climb for a view across the valley to Aoraki / Mount Cook, The Footstool, and the Hooker and Mueller glaciers and lakes. I’d save it for a day when the tops are clear; cloud can hide much of that panorama.

From White Horse Hill, follow Kea Point Track to the Sealy Tarns turnoff. The route gains about 600 m on roughly 2,200 steps, with a gentler start before the steep zigzags. Allow around three to four hours return. The upper track narrows near the tarns, and people coming up and down share the steps, so passing can be slow. This is a worthwhile choice if you want the high view and are ready for a sustained climb, not a quick roadside stop.

The viewpoint faces Aoraki and the broad Hooker Valley, with Mueller Glacier and Lake and Hooker Glacier and Lake among the features below. In calm weather, the tarns can reflect the surrounding peaks. Summer brings alpine flowers along the slopes, which add a closer foreground to the big mountain view.

Many day hikers turn around at the tarns. The route carries on to Mueller Hut, but that continuation is an alpine route requiring mountaineering experience; treat it as a separate undertaking, not a casual extra climb.

The tarns commemorate Edward Percy Sealy (1839–1903), a New Zealand surveyor, photographer and explorer. He explored and photographed Aoraki and Mueller Glacier in the 1860s; geologist Julius von Haast named the tarns for him.

The upper route is exposed, and snow or ice can make its narrow steps slippery. Winter conditions can require mountaineering equipment, and avalanche risk is possible. DOC advises checking conditions before you go and turning back if bad weather approaches. There’s no food service at the tarns; White Horse Hill campground facilities, including toilets and treated water, are down at the shared trailhead, not up on the mountain.
